Chiang Mai Markets – Thailand
Chiang Mai Markets
Of all the places that I have visited over the years, Chiang Mai seems to be the one that has the most street markets. The Chiang Mai markets have something for everyone! If you are a stuff collector, then the Chiang Mai markets – Thailand will be a real treat for you to visit! Don’t get me wrong; there are plenty more things to do in Chiang Mai then go to the markets. And I will write about these things shortly. But if you want to pick up some hand-made souvenirs, or stock up on knock-off designer clothes, you can certainly find what you are looking for here.
I’m a minimalist, so I don’t buy anything at these markets except for local coffee, and some local street food. But I do enjoy the ambiance. Especially during the night when everything is lite up and vibrant.
Chiang Mai Night Market
The most famous market is the Chiang Mai night market that is held every night on Thanon Chang Khlan (Changkhlan Road). This market is everything you could imagine! The vendors sell all kinds of cheap imported stuff, home-made handicrafts, cool souvenir T-shirts, watches, and much more.
There are lot’s of food courts in the area that serve up local food, and western food as well. There is a colorful night bazaar, and there are plenty of shopping arcades. The market is approximately 1 km long and usually runs from dusk to 11 pm. Your hotel or guesthouse can give you directions to the market. This market is marked on all of the tourist maps so it won’t be hard to find.
If you want an escape from the tourist trail, there are some western franchises on this street as well. If you find yourself getting tired of walking around, you can stop at one of the many foot massage spas along the way. Visiting the Chiang Mai night market is always an excellent adventure.
Wat Phun Ohn Weekend Market
I stumbled upon the Wat Phun Ohn market while I was wandering around Chiang Mai’s old town. It was a pleasant surprise. This market is set up around the Wat and is a great place to visit on the weekend.
There are dozens of markets set up within Chiang Mai, especially on the weekends. Maybe you can ask the information desk at your hotel, hostel, or guesthouse for markets to visit.
