Penang Street Art – George Town
The Penang Street Art – George Town makes walking around the city an adventure during the day or night. Most city maps have different street art murals marked so you can do a self-guided mini-tour. You can also join a tour group and learn valuable information about the street art and city. I preferred to explore the city on my own and find the street art at random.
The street art in George Town came to life shortly after the town was entitled its status as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008. Both the Penang State Government and the municipal government of George Town initiated a few different programs to attract street artists to come and help rebrand the city.

It’s an ideal place to visit for tourists because it has plenty of accommodations, restaurants, museums, and it’s a neat place to walk around during the night. My favorite part of the city is the street art. You can find out more about George Town in one of my future posts.
Street Art During The Night
I enjoyed seeing the street art more at night; then I did during the day. The murals seem much more vibrant under the street lights, giving the atmosphere a warm and inviting feeling. I didn’t join any organized Grafitti art tours or use any of the free maps to find any of the street art that will be in the following photos. I mostly saw these murals by venturing out at night in the tourist areas.
Safety
Although I felt safe walking around alone at night in George Town, it is always best to go in a group if you are exploring the streets during the late hours. Malaysia is pretty safe in general compared to most of the countries that I have visited in South America, but criminals live everywhere in the world so please take care. The most significant hazard in George Town would be the traffic from vehicles. Heavy traffic is typical in most developing countries, so please look both ways before you cross the road!
